Today and Possibly Tomorrow
(project link)Ryan Woodring. Today and Possibly Tomorrow. 2022. 3D-printed candies.
Today (and Possibly Tomorrow) is a series of 30 3D-printed candies; each a material record of Woodring’s invisible chronic illness created from a ritualized 3D modeling exercise. Each model is made while experiencing the sensation it attempts to give form to. Employing basic tenets of art therapy and pain management such as creative engagement and distraction, the act of modeling transforms the signified (the effects of Woodring’s illness momentarily lessening) and signifier (the 3D-model) in its process. Today (and Possibly Tomorrow) sets forth a methodology for establishing a hard scale (data) for an otherwise all-consuming feeling; allowing it to coagulate as a singular object that temporarily rests outside the body. However, their edible constitution, made entirely of a sugary starch, promotes a reingestion that materially binds them back to the body and catalyzes further invisible experience at the edge of legibility.
