Pill Cup
(project link)Sarah Davis. Pill Cup. 2019-21. Silver, bronze. 6x7 cm each.
The Pill Cup series includes silver and bronze cups cast from molds of the artist’s empty pill containers pulled from her chemotherapy relief regimen. Part of the larger Push series and preceded by a multi-day performance in which Davis pushed 15 months of saved pill packets into plaster tablets, the work reimagines the materiality of illness and care. The hollowed out pill container forms a crushed calendar of medicinal relief. The act of pushing the pill containers into an unsettled surface in order to make a positive of their altered volumes shifts agency back to the body. Sharing synergies with Ursula K. Le Guin’s beautiful essay “The Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction,” Davis’s work pays homage to the container in both pill, cup, and even corporeal form.
