Disabled Artist Autoresponder Poem

Finnegan Shannon. Disabled Artist Autoresponder Poem. 2024. Video comprised of collaged away messages.

As a compilation of email auto-responder messages of the artist’s disabled friends and colleagues, Finnegan Shannon’s Disabled Artist Autoresponder Poem resonates as a call into the void, a kind of compounding of language defining access and need, communicating lifestyle changes and breaks, intentional and otherwise unavoidable, and laying out boundaries, all reiterated in sequence, time and time again. There is a visual bareness to the poem, styled as short strings of black text on a stark white background. There is also a firm, enduring slowness, the lines read out in a gentle cadence as messages quietly shift on screen in harmony.

Drawn on 25.06.17 by Avianna, Camille, and Ryan outside of the Drew University Archives. Visited by chimney swift and house finch.
