Date Paintings

On Kawara. Date Paintings/Today series. 1966-2013. Acrylic on cavas. Various sizes.

For nearly five decades, On Kawara created new Date Paintings (also known as the Today series) from a meticulous formulaic process of painting the day’s date with white paint on a red, blue, or gray canvas using the conventions of whatever local jurisdiction he found himself in. Kawara abandoned paintings that weren’t finished by midnight. As such, each painting in the series is also a receipt of its own genesis. Despite, or perhaps because of their algorithmic construction, they are human meditations on the construct of linear time, which attempts to quantify the most powerful of invisible forces. Kawara crafted cardboard storage containers for each painting, many of which are lined with clippings from that day’s newspaper.

Drawn on 25.06.11 by Avianna, Camille, and Ryan outside of Sunday Motor Co. Too loud to detect bird noises.
